Morbi (Gujarat):

A court in Gujarat's Morbi town on Wednesday sent Jaysukh Patel, managing director of Oreva Group, to seven-day police custody in a case related to the bridge collapse here.

On October 30 last year, at least 135 people were killed and many others were injured when a bridge collapsed in Gujarat's Morbi town.

Jaisukh Patel surrendered in a court on Tuesday.

The police had told that after this Patel was arrested in the evening.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate remanded Patel to the custody of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the state government till February 8 to probe the matter.

Public prosecutor Sanjay Vora told reporters that the SIT had sought a 14-day remand.

Patel's company was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the bridge.

Patel had surrendered before the court which had issued an arrest warrant against him.

Vora said the prosecution told the court that as part of the maintenance, the company only repaired the rusted cables of the bridge instead of replacing it.

Patel was named as the tenth accused in the charge sheet filed by the police on January 27.

Ajanta Manufacturing Limited (Orewa Group) was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the British-era suspension bridge over the Machhu river in Morbi, which collapsed on October 30 last year, days after it was repaired.

On October 31, a day after the bridge collapse, police arrested nine people in the case, including two managers of the Orewa group, two clerks selling tickets, two sub-contractors repairing the bridge and three crowd managers. There were security guards.

All the ten accused, including Patel, were charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (attempt to culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 336 (act endangering human life), 337 (causing hurt) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by negligence).
