Tomorrow, February 3, in the Orthodox calendar

is the day of memory of Saint Maxim the Confessor

.

He lived in the 7th century.

Thanks to a good education, he received the position of adviser to the emperor Heraclius.

That's when the Monophelite heresy appears.

According to this teaching, Jesus Christ does not have two wills, but one.

Then Maxim left the service, took tonsure and became a monk.

There he devoted almost all his time to the fight against heretics.

Once the monk went to Rome, where he convinced Pope Martin not to accept the new teaching and to convene a council about it.

The emperors decided that this was insolence and exiled both of them to Chersonesus.

Papa died there.

Maxim survived, but suffered for a long time.

He was forced to accept the position of heretics, but each time he refused.

Then the executioners cut off his tongue and right hand so that he could neither speak nor write anything.

And then they sent him to prison, where Maxim died after three years of imprisonment.

In his honor, on February 3, the people celebrate a holiday -

Maxim's Day

.

The church holiday of February 3 is the day of memory of Saint Maxim the Greek

Maxim the Greek lived in the XV-XVI centuries.

He was born in Albania and received a good education there.

Liked to travel, knew several languages.

As an adult, he became a monk in the Vatoped monastery, and was especially fond of studying ancient manuscripts.

He translated the Holy Scriptures into the Slavic language.

He also worked on spiritual education in Russia.

Once they put the monk in prison because they found the books translated by him, which contained errors.

The fact is that for Maxim the Greek, the Slavic language was not his native language.

But the ruler said that he deliberately dishonored the books.

Six years later, the priest was released from prison.
