The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva addressed a letter to the Ombudsman for Equality of Sweden Lars Arrhenius regarding the burning of the Holy Quran in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm.

According to the information given to APA by the Office of the Ombudsman, Sabina Aliyeva expressed concern about the spread of Islamophobia in European countries and said that the committed act violates the freedom of religion and belief of Muslims, and also shows that the fight against discrimination, intolerance and Islamophobia in Europe is not at the desired level.

In the letter, it was mentioned that the careless attitude of the Swedish police against this kind of disrespect for Islam is unacceptable.

At the same time, it was emphasized that the states are responsible for ensuring and protecting the right to freedom of conscience and religion, which is established in the existing international documents in the field of protection of human rights and freedoms.

In conclusion, the Azerbaijani Ombudsman expressed his hope that necessary steps will be taken by the Swedish Equality Ombudsman in order to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future and to bring to justice those who committed acts that cause religious discord.
