The recognition by the deputies of the National Assembly of Bulgaria of the mass famine in the period between 1932 and 1933 as "genocide of the Ukrainian people" is a deliberate distortion of the historical facts, said the Russian ambassador in Sofia Eleonora Mitrofanova, TASS reported.

"The decision to recognize the Gladomora as a genocide directed against Ukrainians and organized on their territory was probably written under the dictation of modern Ukraine. It is insulting that once again Bulgarian politicians decided to rewrite history," she said.

"Mass famine in the early 1930s covered several regions of the USSR - Ukraine, Belarus, Western Siberia, Kazakhstan and other territories. According to various estimates, up to eight million inhabitants of the country of various nationalities died from starvation" , the Russian ambassador also emphasized.

With 134 votes "for", 26 - "against" and no "abstentions", the Bulgarian National Assembly, in a joint draft proposed by the Foreign Policy Committee, declared the Great Famine-Famine in Ukraine in 1932-1933 to be genocide and condemned categorically its perpetrators, writes BTA.

Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the National Assembly for declaring the famine in Ukraine a genocide

The decision also declares every last Saturday of November as a Day of Honor and Remembrance for the Victims of the Famine in Ukraine.
