On February 1, the imprisoned ex-president of Georgia,

Mikheil Saakashvili

, remotely connected to the session of the Tbilisi City Court, which is considering the lawyers' petition to postpone the sentence and release Saakashvili due to health reasons, the "Echo Kavkaza" website reports.

In Ukrainian, he read his address to Ukraine, in which he declared that he was confident of its victory:

"But if I don't survive, my heart should be buried in Kyiv," Saakashvili said.

He also stated that he was tortured and poisoned in prison, writes Newsgeorgia.ge.

Then the ex-president lifted his shirt and demonstrated his physical condition to the court:

"The only thing I am asking for is to give me the opportunity for adequate treatment," said Saakashvili, addressing the court.

At the beginning of this January, pickets in support of Saakashvili were held in Georgia and more than 20 countries.

The participants called for the release of the politician and to give him the opportunity to undergo treatment in the ER.

Some activists accused the current Georgian authorities of seeking Saakashvili's death.

  • The ex-president of Georgia, who has Ukrainian citizenship, was arrested in Tbilisi in the fall of 2021 after secretly returning to the country.

    By that time, he was sentenced in absentia to 6 years of imprisonment for abuse of power.

  • Due to the deterioration of health, Saakashvili was transferred to a civilian clinic in Tbilisi.

    The politician himself and his supporters insist that the worsening condition could have been caused by poisoning.

    The Georgian authorities claim that there is no evidence for such conclusions.
