19-year-old Bulgarian Nikola Kolev has been convicted by a British court of possessing and distributing pornographic photographs of children, reports BirminghamLive.

The teenager was detained three years ago after the authorities came across pictures of children circulating on a social network.

The police found in the computer of the then 16-year-old young man pornographic pictures with children between the ages of 1 and 10.

Before the court in Shrewsbury, Kolev stated that in this way he was trying to overcome the effects of social isolation during the lockdown.

His lawyer, Robert Edwards, asked for a lighter sentence because Nicolas realizes what he has done and is trying to improve.

According to Edwards, during the pandemic and the lockdown, he came across a Bulgarian chat room, and his participation in it gave him a sense of "identity".

The lawyer is adamant that Kolev did not use the photos to experience sexual pleasure, BGVoice reported.

The young man has two charges filed - for possession and distribution of pornographic materials with children.

On these charges, he was sentenced to 12 months of probation with two years suspended – if he commits another crime during that period, Kolev will have to serve his sentence in custody.

In addition, within 20 days the young man will have to participate in a rehabilitation program and pay a fine of 425 pounds.

There is also an order issued for 10 years, during which he will be under constant supervision by the services.

The judge in the case accepted as a mitigating circumstance the age Kolev was when he committed the acts.

He therefore sentenced him to half the sentence that would have been imposed on an adult.
