Floral offerings from Miguel Díaz-Canel, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and president of the Republic, and from the Ministry of Culture accompany today the funeral honors of the outstanding poetess

Teresa Melo

, who died this Monday in her native Santiago de Cuba.

Similarly, offerings arrived at the Casa del Caribe, located in this city, on behalf of Inés María Chapman, vice prime minister, from the PCC and the Government in this southeastern territory, from the Cuban Book Institute, the Provincial Committee of the Union of Writers and Artists from Cuba (Uneac) and family and friends, among others.

From the early hours of the morning, the people of the Hero City and the highest authorities of the province paid heartfelt tribute to whoever was a member of Uneac and an Honorary member of the Hermanos Saíz Association.

Díaz-Canel lamented this morning on Twitter the death of Melo, whom he described as an irreproachable woman and much loved in the country that he loved and defended so much.

The Head of State sent a hug, also on behalf of his wife Lis Cuesta, to the relatives and friends of the intellectual from Santiago.

“With immense sadness we have learned of the death of our friend Teresa Melo, an irreproachable woman, a poet loved by her Santiago and by Cuba, that Island that she loved and defended so much.

My hug and Lis's came to her daughter, to all her family and her friends.

On the same social network, the Cuban Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero, expressed his regret over the death of Melo, whom he considered an excellent Cuban poet and intellectual, revolutionary and faithful defender of Cuba.

Marrero sent condolences to his daughter, family and friends, to Cuban culture, and to Santiago.

“We deeply regret the death of Teresa Melo, excellent Cuban poet and intellectual, revolutionary, faithful defender of Cuba.

Our heartfelt condolences reach her daughter, her family and friends, Cuban culture, Santiago.”

Teresa de la Caridad Melo Rodríguez at the time of her death worked as editor of the Oriente publishing house.

She treasures a valuable poetic work that places her as one of the main voices of the so-called generation of the 80s.
