Several Latin American countries refused to transfer weapons to
Ukraine
.
Their authorities rejected the US proposals and the appeals of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is visiting Argentina, Chile and Brazil.
This was reported by the Reuters and Infodefense agencies.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador rejected the US offer to transfer Russian-made weapons to Ukraine in exchange for modern US-made counterparts.
The leaders of Colombia and Brazil did the same.
For example,
during a joint briefing with Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz in Buenos Aires ,
Argentine President Alberto Fernandez categorically refused the initiative to send military equipment to Ukraine.
According to Fernandez, Argentina and Latin America do not plan to send weapons to Ukraine or any other "conflict zone".
During the visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to
Chile, President Gabriel Borich
did not mention the war in Ukraine at all.
And at a joint press conference in Brazil, Scholz said that he was glad to see Brazil return to the world stage.
But he was very surprised when his
fellow leader of Brazil
expressed his views on the war in Ukraine.
"I think Russia made a classic mistake by invading another country's territory, so Russia is wrong. But I still believe that when one doesn't want to, two won't fight. You have to want peace," he said, adding that heard very little from either side about finding a peaceful end to the war.
The head of the US Southern Command, Ms. General Laura Richardson, reported last week that Washington is negotiating with six Latin American countries on the issue of handing over to Ukraine Soviet and Russian weapons that are in service with them.
"I said that even if it was scrap metal, we will not give Russian weapons to continue the war in Ukraine," the
president of Colombia
said in
response to US Southern Command.
Currently, in addition to Colombia, the armies of Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina have military equipment of Russian or Soviet origin.
It will be recalled that Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that
his country does not agree with Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
He spoke in support of Ukrainians who suffered during the hostilities.
Before that, Lopez Obrador tried to maintain neutrality in the war and refused to impose
sanctions against Russia
