An amendment to the Family Code of Slovenia enters into force today, according to which same-sex couples will be able to marry and adopt children, reported the Slovenian newsroom of TV En1.

Legal marriage in Slovenia will no longer be only between a man and a woman, as before, but between two people, regardless of their gender.

In July, Slovenia's highest court ruled that the law, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman only, discriminates against gay and lesbian couples.

He revoked the contested texts of the law immediately and ordered the parliament to change the text within six months. 

In October 2022, Slovenia became the first country in Eastern Europe to adopt same-sex marriage legislation, BTA adds.
