Romania has reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 on a farm in the central part of the country, Reuters reported, citing the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

The outbreak in the town of Codlea, near the city of Brasov, has infected 42,154 poultry, killing 23,472 of them, the Paris-based international organization said, citing information from Romanian health authorities.

This is the first occurrence of the disease since May last year, the report said.

Bird flu has killed tens of millions of birds in Europe over the past year.

Many of them were slaughtered to stop the spread of the disease, BTA reported.
