Battalion "South" was established in 2006. It is part of a paramilitary structure in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
"South" bears the name of Ramzan Kadyrov's father, Akhmat Kadyrov, who was killed in 2004 in a bomb attack carried out by Chechen separatists in Grozny, and is unofficially called "Kadyrovtsi".
