At least 24 people died in northern Peru after a bus carrying 60 passengers fell off a cliff on Saturday morning, police told local media, Reuters reported.

Peru's transport oversight agency confirmed the information in a statement without specifying the number of dead or injured.

The tragedy occurred in the El Alto region in the remote northern part of Peru, the service said.

Initial investigations have shown that the bus appears to have had an up-to-date safety inspection and accident insurance.
