The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen

Ursula von der Leyen - German doctor and politician (after Albrecht). Ursula Gertrude Albrecht called on Germany to decisively switch to renewable energy sources - for the sake of the climate and to limit Moscow's income, BTA reported.

"There can be no return to dependence on Russian fossil fuels under any circumstances," von der Leyen said today at an event for the center-right Christian Democrats (CDU) in Germany.

"This is a generational task that we must master," she added.

Von der Leyen, who is a member of the CDU, spoke at a party meeting in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, an industrial region that includes Cologne, Düsseldorf and Dortmund.

She stated that the western German state has all the prerequisites to emerge stronger from the transformation to clean technologies.

But the fight against climate change should not be at the expense of the economy, Von der Leyen pointed out.

She said Russian President Vladimir Putin "thinks he can blackmail us with our dependence on oil, coal and gas from Russia," but that Germany quickly found other sources.

The president of the European Commission also said that Ukraine enjoys unconditional support from the EU and that the country must prevail against Russian attacks to protect European values.

"We stand by Ukraine without any ifs and buts," Von der Leyen was quoted as saying by Reuters. Ukraine "is fighting for our common values, it is fighting for the observance of international law and the principles of democracy, and that is why Ukraine must win this war," she added.

Von der Leyen and her EC colleagues are preparing for an EU-Ukraine summit on February 3.
