The Spanish police announced that they seized 4.5 tons of cocaine from a Togolese-flagged cargo ship seized off the Canary Islands, BNR reported.

The Orion V, which transports cattle from Latin America to the Middle East, has been under surveillance for more than two years.

It had previously been "searched and searched, but no drugs were found inside despite sufficient evidence," police said Saturday.

But a joint naval and air operation finally managed to find the cocaine on Tuesday, hidden in a container used for livestock feed.

They seized nearly 6.5 kg of cocaine in the driver's cabin of "Captain Andreevo"

The 28-member crew of the ship, which is from 9 countries, was detained

A total of nine tonnes of drugs were seized in January, police said in a statement.

Spain's proximity to North Africa, a key source of hashish, and its close ties to former colonies in Latin America, the world's main cocaine-producing region, have made it a gateway to Europe for drugs.
