Peruvians demonstrate around the US embassy in Lima, January 25, 2023.

The outraged chanted songs to demand their main demand, the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, as well as Washington's non-intervention in Peru's internal affairs.

"Get out, Yankees!"

they yelled repeatedly.

One of the participants stated that the purpose of the sit-in was to express repudiation of US interference and its support for the Boluarte government.

The presence of the demonstrators, mostly indigenous and some in their typical attire, caused surprise in the exclusive eastern area of Lima, while a police cordon covered the façade of the North American embassy.

The US embassy in Lima was one of the first to recognize Boluarte as Peru's head of state, replacing Pedro Castillo, who was ousted by Congress on December 7 and promptly jailed.

Former President Castillo assured in mid-December that the US was behind the police repression that then left two dead among the protesters.

Now those deaths number in the dozens.

This same Wednesday, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, asked the US ambassador to Peru, Lisa Kenna, to refrain from continuing to intervene in the political crisis.
