The president of the United States,

Joe Biden

, appointed this Friday Jeff Zients, former coordinator of the response to covid-19, as White House chief of staff.

Zients will replace Ron Klain, who resigned last week after another batch of classified documents was found at Biden's home in Wilmington, Delaware.

In his new position, Zients will be responsible, in particular, for hiring staff in Biden's office and for the president's agenda.

In a statement, the president thanked Klain for his work and announced the appointment of Zients, who he said has already faced "some of the toughest problems in government."

“When I ran for office, I promised to make government work for the American people.

That's what Jeff does.

The great task ahead of him is to efficiently and fairly apply the laws that we have managed to pass,” he noted.

Biden has decided to change his chief of staff at this delicate moment for his government,

when he has two years left in office, after elections in which the Democrats have lost their majority in the House of Representatives although they maintain the majority in the Senate and with complicated issues on the table as the appearance of classified documents at the president's residence in Delaware.

The president has yet to decide whether to run for re-election.

Although he has indicated on more than one occasion that this is his wish, he has not confirmed it.
