At least 16 people have died and another 19 are missing after the powerful tropical storm Cheneso hit Madagascar, the country's National Risk and Disaster Management Office said.

Cheneso made landfall on the northeast coast of the Indian Ocean island nation on Jan. 19, then headed southwest.

Nearly 55,421 people in 15 regions are affected.

Over 25,600 people have been displaced, BTV reported.

Hurricane Nicole made landfall in Florida

13,356 houses were flooded and another 500 were destroyed.

Basic infrastructure, including health facilities, bridges and schools, has also been affected, disrupting traffic and forcing the suspension of classes in several areas.

The danger has not passed - heavy rains are still forecast in the north-west, west and east of the country.
