Sanctions, first introduced in 2014 in response to Russian actions in Ukraine, were significantly expanded from February 2022 in the wake of the invasion of Russian forces into Ukrainian lands.
The measures include restrictions on trade, finance, technology and dual-use goods, manufacturing, transportation and luxury goods.
They include a ban on the import or shipping by sea of crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to the EU, the exclusion of several Russian banks from the SWIFT international payment system, and the suspension of the broadcasting of several Kremlin-backed disinformation media, the announcement states.
The EU introduced various sanctions in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine.
These include restrictions on economic relations due to the illegal seizure of Crimea and Sevastopol, as well as the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Sanctions have also been imposed on numerous Russian citizens and organizations, which have had their assets frozen and banned from traveling to the EU.
