The shooting was near a synagogue and is being treated as an act of terrorism.

The attacker opened fire on people leaving the synagogue.

The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories has deteriorated sharply in the past few days, DPA notes.

A spokesman for the Palestinian movement "Hamas", which rules the Gaza Strip, said that the attack today in Jerusalem was a punishment for the operation of the Israeli army in the Palestinian refugee camp "Jenin" in the West Bank, carried out yesterday.

Nine Palestinians were killed and 20 wounded during clashes with the Israeli military yesterday in Jenin.

Israel said the operation in Jenin was carried out to arrest members of the Islamic Jihad group.
