Seven people were injured and one person is still being sought after a gas explosion in a three-story residential building of the Evangelical Church in the Polish city of Katowice, DPA reported.

Another seven people, including three children, were rescued or left the building on their own, a spokesman for the local fire command said.

Medical assistance is provided to all the injured.

Rescue teams suspect that one more person may have been buried under the rubble of the three-story building, half of which collapsed.

According to the fire service, the explosion was most likely caused by gas used for domestic purposes.

Rescue operations continue, AP reported.

The incident happened around 8:30 am.

It is not clear how many people were in the building at the time of the explosion.

An explosion destroyed a shop and a home in Antwerp.

There are arrests

Footage from the Polish television channel Te Faw En 24 showed the apartment building, built in the late 19th century, with a completely collapsed facade and front.

The fire service has requested that a search team from the mining town of Jastšembe-Zdrój be sent for assistance.
