The Romanian government is considering returning the discount of 50 banas (about 20 cents) in the price of fuel after removing this measure from January 1, reports Digi 24 TV, quoted by BTA.

According to government sources, talks on the return of the measure will begin when the price of diesel fuel exceeds the threshold of 8.5 lei per liter.

Fuel prices in Romania started to rise from January 14.

At the moment, a liter of gasoline costs an average of 6.59 lei, and a liter of diesel fuel costs an average of 7.74 lei, Digi 24 notes.

Comparing the price of fuels from the end of last year to today, there is an increase of 57 baht per liter for both types of fuel.

It can be said that in just a few weeks the prices have caught up with the reduction provided by the canceled state discount, the TV shows.

The higher prices are observed because the price of Brent oil rose - on January 4 it was quoted at $78 per barrel, while it is currently $87 per barrel.

This is a sign that fears of a global recession have subsided, and for this reason there is a greater demand for fuels, Digi 24 notes.

When he announced the suspension of the discount of 50 baht per liter of fuel from January 1, 2023, Prime Minister Nicolae Chuka said that the government is ready to reintroduce it if prices are about to exceed the purchasing power of citizens, Agerpress recalls.
