We are celebrating 25 years since the launch of the first section of the Sofia Metro!

Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova wrote this on Facebook.

On 28.01.1998, the first 6.5 km were opened.

Sofia is hosting an International Conference on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the start of the metro

Today, the Sofia metro is already 52 km long.

We managed to build 80% of them in the last 14 years.

Many people no longer remember what Sofia was like before there was a metro through Druzhba, Mladost, Izgrev, Lozenets, Nadezhda, Krasno Selo, and Ovcha Kupel.

And we are currently building 3 km of metro through the "Poduyane" district, and in the spring we will start another 6 km through the "Slatina" district.

Thus, in 2023 we will build a total of 9 km of new metro network.

With the secured financing and the started construction, we guarantee that in 4 years the metro network of Sofia will be 61 km and over half a million people will travel in the fastest and most convenient way in the city every day.

In these 14 years, I protected and secured over BGN 2.5 billion for the construction of the metro.

This is a huge project - both in terms of scale and construction activity, behind which stands both a clear management vision for the development of Sofia and the consistent work of the team of Prof. Stoyan Bratoev and "Metropolitan".

I thank all the engineers, designers and builders for the enormous work, as well as the politicians who stood behind the Sofia metro.

In less than two decades, we built a completely new transport network in Sofia.

This is a huge success for Sofia and a project that should continue.

Therefore, together with the new construction in 2023, we will also provide the routes for two future extensions - through "Lyulin" to the ring road and through "Vitosha VEC Simeonovo" and "Krastova Vada" quarters to Studentski Grad.

As mayor, I made a commitment that the construction of the metro will not stop.

To this day I keep my promise, despite the opposition and difficulties we go through.

Because I am convinced that the Sofia metro is the most important project, and there is no place in it for mandated thinking and conjunctural calculations.
