The newspaper noted that the US had previously said that tanks would not be part of the arms supply.

"The Biden administration is committed to sending a significant number of M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, and an announcement about the deliveries could be made this week," officials told the newspaper.

"The announcement will be part of a wider diplomatic agreement with Germany in which Berlin will agree to send a smaller number of its own Leopard 2 tanks and also approve the delivery of more of these German tanks from Poland and others countries," states the Wall Street Journal.

"Spiegel": Scholz decided to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine

According to the newspaper, President Joe Biden agreed to explore providing the tanks in a phone call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz last week.

In a reversal of position, the US appears to be abandoning its previous opposition to sending M1 Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine, Reuters reported, citing senior US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

They said they did not know if there had been a final decision to send US Abrams tanks to Ukraine, but that an announcement could be made as early as this week.

This step would encourage Germany to follow the example of the USA, emphasizes Reuters and adds that it has not yet received an answer from the Pentagon, notes BTA.
