The European Commission took into account the information about the NABU's investigation into the facts of corruption in Ukraine and welcomes the efforts to implement reforms to eradicate this phenomenon.

Ana Pisonero, spokeswoman for the European Commission on Enlargement and Neighborhood Affairs, stated this at a briefing in Brussels, Ukrinform reports.

"There is a general rule - we do not comment on ongoing criminal investigations. But we

welcome the fact that the authorities of Ukraine are taking these problems seriously

," said the EC spokeswoman.

She reminded that Ukraine, within the framework of the enlargement process, undertook to strengthen the fight against corruption, particularly at a high level, by conducting active and effective investigations.

The state also undertook to achieve a match between the number of investigations and court sentences.

"This is in the conclusion of the European Commission regarding Ukraine's application for EU membership," Pisonero noted.

She also announced that in the

fall of 2023, the European Commission will assess Ukraine's progress

in implementing the reforms defined by the European Union within the framework of the enlargement package.

"Anti-corruption activity is a key factor in the process of EU enlargement, as well as a condition for the provision of macro-financial assistance from the EU. It is obvious that the

EU has various means and mechanisms of control

over how and where EU funds are used. We are in close contact with the authorities of Ukraine in order to to ensure that ... the funds are used properly," the spokeswoman of the European Commission informed.

Corruption scandals and resignations in the Ukrainian government

After the scandal with the Ministry of Defense's procurement of products for the Armed Forces, the Deputy Minister of Special Affairs, Vyacheslav Shapovalov, resigned.

NABU detectives are already investigating the case of the purchase of products for the army at inflated prices.

The Cabinet of Ministers dismissed Vasyl Lozynskyi, Deputy Minister of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure, who was detained by NABU employees the day before while receiving a bribe of $400,000.

On January 24, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of the Office of the President, resigned, without giving reasons.

The head of state has already issued a decree dismissing Tymoshenko from office.

On the same day, the Cabinet of Ministers dismissed four deputy ministers and heads of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Sumy, and Kherson Oblasts from their positions.
