The elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were held on December 4.

Oberoi is the main contender of AAP.

The candidates for the post of Deputy Mayor are Aale Mohammad Iqbal and Jalaj Kumar (AAP) and Kamal Bagdi (BJP).

Important information related to the case:

  • After the recently concluded municipal elections in the national capital, the second meeting of the house is going to be held today, in which the mayor and deputy mayor of Delhi can be elected.

  • The election of mayor and deputy mayor was to be held in the first meeting of the house on January 6 after the municipal elections, but the proceedings of the house were adjourned after members of AAP and BJP clashed with each other and created ruckus. Due to which the election of mayor and deputy mayor could not be held.

  • The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections were held on December 4 and the counting of votes took place on December 7.

AAP ended the 15-year rule of BJP in MCD by winning 134 wards.

The BJP won 104 wards in the 250-member MCD house, while the Congress won nine.

Oberoi is the main contender of AAP.

The candidates for the post of deputy mayor are Aale Mohammad Iqbal and Jalaj Kumar (AAP) and Kamal Bagdi (BJP).

  • Apart from the mayor and the deputy mayor, six members of the MCD's standing committee are also likely to be elected during the House meeting on January 24.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi was formed in April 1958 and its mayor had influential powers till 2012.

In the year 2012, the corporation was divided into three different municipal corporations and each corporation has its own mayor.

  • In 2022, the Center merged North Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (64 wards).

  • He told 'PTI-Bhasha', "The election of the mayor would have been done in the first meeting of the house itself, but it is unfortunate that it could not happen last time due to the uproar."

I hope that tomorrow this process will go smoothly.

  • He said, “Aruna Asaf Ali was the first mayor of Delhi and Rajni Abbi was the last mayor before the MCD was divided into three parts till 2012 and after 10 years again there will be a woman mayor, it will be good for the city as well as for the person. It is a matter of great fortune that she will become the mayor of Delhi.
