After it became known that Poland had officially asked Germany for permission to send German Leopard 2 tanks in its possession to Ukraine, Berlin officials on Tuesday confirmed the request and said they would consider it "with due urgency."

In the last hours, in addition, the signs that Berlin will send its own tanks have increased.

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak broke the news on Tuesday.

In a tweet, the official also called on the Berlin Executive "to join the

coalition of countries that support Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks

."

Finland and Denmark have shown their willingness to join the Warsaw initiative and the UK has promised to send some of its Challenger tanks.

The Polish daily

Wyborcza

recalled that countries that have such tanks had to sign a declaration in which they promised not to transfer the equipment to non-NATO countries without the consent of the manufacturer.

During his recent visit to Lviv, President Andrzej Duda said that the Polish government is ready to send between 10 and 14 Leopard 2 tanks (one company) to Ukraine out of the total of about 240 of this type in the army of the country.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had said on Sunday that Germany, which makes the tanks, will not try to stop Poland from supplying the high-tech armor to Berlin.

On Tuesday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called for rapid delivery of new weapons to Ukraine

, where a general stagnation in war operations is expected to lead to new offensives in the months after winter.

"At this crucial moment in the war,

we must provide Ukraine with heavier and more advanced weapons, and we must do it faster

," Stoltenberg said after holding talks with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in Berlin.

In this context,

RT en Español reported that Germany decided to send Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukraine, citing a report from

Der Spiegel

on Tuesday .

The article in the German magazine highlights that the chancellor, Olaf Scholz, made the decision on the matter “after months of debates”.

According to information from

Der Spiegel

, that decision would imply the delivery of at least one tank company of this type, coming from the stocks of the Bundeswehr (the German army).

A Reuters dispatch indicated on this day that, according to two sources familiar with the matter, Germany will send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and allow other nations, such as Poland, to do the same

, while the United States could supply Abrams armored vehicles.

Meanwhile, a few hours ago, the American newspaper

The Wall Street Journal

reported on Washington's decision to supply Ukraine with a not inconsiderable number of M1 Abrams main battle tanks, as part of the diplomatic understanding with Berlin.

kyiv has lately been putting pressure on European countries, especially Germany, to supply it with more modern weapons systems, including Leopard 2 heavy tanks.

Der Spiegel

noted that Scholz had previously stated that he would agree to the supply if it was done in conjunction with other nations, such as the US, which would deliver Abrams tanks.

Russian officials have repeatedly criticized Western arms deliveries to kyiv, stressing that this brings NATO closer to the dangerous line of a direct military confrontation with Russia.

The Kremlin has warned that Germany's shipment of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, if it happens, will have an impact on Russian-German relations.

"Relations are already at a very low point and there is no substantive dialogue either with Germany or with other NATO countries," said the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dmitri Peskov, at his daily press conference on Tuesday.

Peskov added that the supplies of the Leopard 2 main battle tanks, which kyiv claims, "do not bode well" for such relations and will "inevitably leave a mark" for future ties.

Earlier, Sergei Riabkov, Russia's deputy foreign minister, had confirmed that

Western supplies could have greater consequences.

"We have said on numerous occasions that escalation is the most dangerous path and the consequences can be unpredictable (...) Our signals are not heeded and Russia's adversaries continue to raise the stakes," Ryabkov said.

Peskov warned that

"all countries directly or indirectly involved in supplying Ukraine with weapons or increasing its technological level will be held responsible."
