The number of asylum applications in the European Union (EU) increased by almost 50% in the past year, Welt am Sonntag reported, citing a confidential report on the migration and refugee situation.

According to the report, which did not specify which institution it was drawn up, the number of asylum applications in the 27 EU countries rose to 923,991 last year.

This corresponds to an increase of 46.5% compared to 2021.

In the situation analysis, the European Commission refers to previously unpublished data of the European Union Asylum Agency from January 4, 2023.

The document also shows that last year Germany registered the highest level of asylum applications since 2016, the newspaper said.

Overall, Germany received the most asylum applications in the entire EU in 2022, with a total of 226,467, followed by France (154,597), Spain (116,952) and Austria (108,490).

At the other end of the ranking, the publication places Hungary (46), Slovakia (544) and Latvia (622).

Every third asylum seeker in Germany is from Syria, followed by Afghanistan (17%), Turkey (10%) and Iraq (6.7%).
