If Ukraine receives American F-16 fighters, they will help protect part of the sky from Russian missiles, but they are unlikely to be able to shoot down missiles flying on a ballistic trajectory.

Yuriy Ignat, the spokesman of the Air Force Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, told about this on the air of the "Kyiv" TV channel.

He confirmed that F-16 fighter jets can close part of Ukraine's airspace.

Ignat noted that cruise missiles "could be good targets for such aircraft."

"It is the case in all countries of the world that most of the country is covered by aviation units. There are planes that are on combat duty, and if there is a threat, they take to the sky and fly out to intercept missiles," said the spokesman of the Air Force.

At the same time, he explained that air defense means protect more local objects - military airfields, critical infrastructure, government buildings.

"That's why the planes there are a bigger part of air defense than anti-aircraft systems," Ignat added.

We will remind you that the day before, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Wopke Hoekstra, said that the country's government will consider the possibility of supplying Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets, if the Ukrainian government asks for it.

After that, the US ambassador to the OSCE, Michael Carpenter, assured that the decision of the Netherlands on F-16 for Ukraine will have broad support in the United States.

Note that F-16 fighters could significantly change the course of the war and greatly improve the situation at the front for Ukraine.

This was previously stated by military expert Petro Chernyk.
