About 4.5 million Slovak citizens have the right to vote today in a referendum on a constitutional amendment, BTA reported.

The amendment foresees the possibility to announce early elections in Slovakia, as is the case in other European countries.

Under the current situation, the Slovak constitution does not allow the parliament, which is elected for a term of four years, to be dissolved early even if the government has fallen and there is no majority to form a new one.

Opportunities to avoid an early vote in Slovakia are running out

The referendum was prompted by the left-wing opposition, which submitted around 400,000 citizen signatures in support of the change.

The poll will only be considered valid if at least 50% of those eligible to vote participated in it, but such a turnout has never been reached - except for the EU accession referendum 20 years ago.

Bratislava is currently governed by a conservative three-party coalition, which lost its parliamentary majority.

According to all the studies, she is threatened with a complete defeat in new elections.

Therefore, the ruling parties tried until the last to prevent the possible success of the referendum, notes DPA.

The next regular elections are next year.
