An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck today off the coast of the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and was also felt in Puerto Rico, BTA reported.

Local media reported that some buildings were cracked and furniture was displaced.

But there were no reports of damage, a government spokeswoman told The Associated Press.

The quake was at a depth of 100 miles (166 km) very close to the island, an overseas department and region of France, according to the US Geological Survey.

According to data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the earthquake was 39 kilometers northwest of the administrative center of Bas Ter, where more than 10,000 people live.

Over the years, the eastern Caribbean has experienced strong earthquakes.

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck in November 2007 and caused damage to the French Caribbean island of Martinique, as well as power outages in the region.

In November 2004, there was an earthquake near the island nation of Dominica that killed at least one person in Guadeloupe.
