'Vagir' submarine has the distinction of being completed in the shortest construction time among all indigenously built submarines so far

The Indian Navy will commission the fifth Scorpene class submarine INS Vagir on 23 January.

It is built in India under Project-75 of the Indian Navy at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai.

The strength of the Indian Navy is going to increase manifold from Vagir.

This is the fifth diesel electric Scorpene submarine.

  • The construction of the submarine Vagi, equipped with features such as advanced acoustic absorption technology, began in July 2009.

    It got its name from INS Vagir, a Kalvari class submarine of Russia.

    It served in the Navy from 1973 to 2001.

  • Vagir made its maiden voyage in February last year when its sea trials began.

    It has gone through a series of extensive and rigorous sea trials.

  • The submarine, also known as 'Sand Shark', was handed over to the Indian Navy on December 20 last year.

    According to a government release, it represents 'Stealth and Fearlessness'.

  • Six Kalvari-class submarines designed by French company DCNS are being built in India under Project-75 of the Indian Navy.

    It can perform missions like anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance.

  • According to news agency PTI, a Navy official said that Vagir is an excellent maritime 'weapon', will enhance India's capability and is capable of carrying out diverse missions.
