Israel's Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara called on the Prime Minister of the Jewish state, Benjamin Netanyahu

Benjamin Netanyahu was born on October 21, 1949 in Tel Aviv, Israel. He is an Israeli politician and fired Interior Minister Arie Deri a day after the Supreme Court declared Deri unfit for public office, local news agency TPS reported, quoted by BTA.

"Member of the Knesset (Parliament) Derry cannot continue to serve as a minister in the government of Israel," the Middle Eastern country's number one prosecutor wrote in a letter to Israel's prime minister that was made public today.

"You must act in accordance with the court decision and remove Derry from his functions in the government," the prosecutor said.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled by a 10-1 vote that Derry, leader of the religious Shas party, had misled a lower court that he would retire from politics as part of a plea deal.

The court also ruled that Derry's conviction was related to "moral turpitude," a legal term that broadly describes immoral, unethical behavior that seriously violates the standards of a given community.

The court's ruling on moral turpitude will keep Derry out of politics for seven years.

Shas Party leaders insist they will not remain in government if Derry cannot participate in it.

He currently holds two positions - Minister of Internal Affairs and Minister of Health.

Derry is also deputy prime minister and sits on the powerful security cabinet.

Shas has 11 seats in the Knesset, making it Likud's largest coalition partner.

The right-wing coalition currently holds 64 of the total 120 seats in the Knesset.

Derry strongly refused to accept the decision and declared: When they close the door in front of us, we will enter through the window.

When they close the window, we'll get through the ceiling with God's help.

But Shas' statement opposing the court's decision stressed that its Council of Torah Sages, a rabbinic-led body with supreme authority over party affairs, would decide how to act.

Calls are growing for Netanyahu to fire Deri, but the prime minister has not spoken publicly on the issue.

Netanyahu visited Deri at his home last night.

Derry's legal problems stem from a January 2022 plea agreement in which he admitted understating the value of a property sold to his brother to avoid paying land tax.

He also admitted to under-declaring sales proceeds and avoiding paying 534,000 shekels ($150,770) in income tax by transferring payments from an investment fund to his brother.

As part of the plea agreement, Derry received a suspended sentence and paid a fine of 180,000 shekels ($50,800).

The plea agreement did not specify how long Derry would stay out of politics or whether the sentence included a moral turpitude penalty.

Previously, in 2000, Derry was convicted of accepting a bribe while he was Home Secretary.

Due to good behavior, he served 22 months of his three-year sentence and was released from prison in 2002. Derry returned to the Knesset in 2013.

If Derry resigns or is sacked, his Health and Home Affairs portfolios will revert to the Prime Minister.

By law, however, Netanyahu is barred from holding any other cabinet posts because he is on trial for corruption.

Netanyahu has been charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three separate investigations.

The Prime Minister maintains that he is innocent.
