A polar cyclone brought storms and winds to Italy, as a result of which the first real winter conditions were established in the country, and in the central part of the Apennines, where the ski industry is at a standstill, the long-awaited snow fell, ANSA reported for BTA.

The rough seas could cause serious damage to pools, spas and other infrastructure in resorts along the Ligurian coast, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the western coast of Sardinia, meteorologist Lorenzo Tedici said.

On the website www.iLMeteo.it he predicted "torrential rains in the form of thunderstorms or sudden downpours that will flood Tuscany, Lazio, Sardinia and especially Campania".

The risk of floods and landslides will be very high, Tedici warned.

Many areas have already been issued warnings and "code orange" for upcoming rainfall.

There will also be heavy rain in the northern part of the country, especially in Lombardy, eastern Liguria and the northeastern part of the country, Tedici said.

Snow will be abundant in the north, also in the hilly regions as well as in the mountains, and in places it can also be found in low places, mixed with sleet and rain in Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna, the meteorologist said.

Snow will also cover the Apennines, at an altitude above 1000 meters.
