Russia has produced its first nuclear warheads for the "Poseidon" supertorpedo, which will be deployed on the Russian nuclear submarine "Belgorod", TASS reported, citing a source from the Ministry of Defense.

"The first ammunition set for the Poseidon has been produced and the Belgorod submarine will receive it in the near future," the source said.

In 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin first broke the news about the Poseidon, saying it was an entirely new type of strategic nuclear weapon powered by its own nuclear power source.

During the same speech, Putin added that the torpedo has an unlimited range and can operate at extraordinary depths at a speed several times higher than torpedoes fired by ordinary submarines and other vessels, BTA notes.

"They are very quiet, quite maneuverable and practically indestructible to the enemy. There is no weapon that can strike back at them nowadays," Putin said.
