"Nabisada and one of her bodyguards were shot dead at her apartment," Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said.

"Security forces have launched a serious investigation into the incident," Zadran said, adding that the former lawmaker's brother was also injured in the attack.

The incident happened in the dark between last night and this morning.

Former lawmaker Mariam Solaimankhil praised Nabisada as "Afghanistan's fearless fighter" in a tweet.

"A true pioneer - a strong, outspoken woman who stood up for what she believed in, even in the face of danger."

"Despite the opportunity to leave Afghanistan, she chose to stay and fight for her people."

Nabisada, 32, from Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan, was elected to parliament in 2018.

MEP Hannah Neumann tweeted outrage over Nabisada's killing: "I am saddened and angry and want the world to know. She was killed in the dark while the Taliban built their gender segregation system in broad daylight." .”
