Russian publicist and oppositionist Andriy Piontkovskyi told about this in an interview with TSN.ua.
"These reshuffles have absolutely nothing to do with the course of the war. And the current defense minister appoints the current chief of the general staff as the head of the special operation. The meaningful part of this the hasty combination was to demote Surovikin. Surovikin went from the head of the operation to the deputy head. I think most military experts also think the same. This is the response of the general staff of the Putin military corporation to an unprecedented attack on them by Prigozhin, Kadyrov, whose creature Surovikin was considered to be." , - he said.
Piontkovsky recalled that over the past week, a whole series of personal insults took place, with which Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the "Wagner" PMC, awarded General Valery Gerasimov and Defense Minister Serhii Shoigu.
He positions himself as an intelligent leader of the Russian state, who is fighting a worthy opponent and has something to talk about with a worthy opponent.
I think that the generals took advantage of this: they explained to Putin that Prigozhin, whom he let off the chain, was already beginning to threaten not only them, but also Putin himself.
And that was the meaning of this operation," the publicist explained.
Piontkovsky believes that with such staff reshuffles, the staff generals won a hardware victory not only over Prigozhin, but also over Putin himself.

And the fact that these appointments were formally accepted not by Putin, but by Shoigu, confirms the status of Shoigu himself, about whose resignation there were also enough rumors. Shoigu's group - Gerasimova has been in power for about 10 years, during which time they have filled the entire composition of the Ministry of Defense. Of course, with people personally devoted to themselves. And now the events that took place yesterday (January 11 - ed.) are the revenge of the Shoigu-Gerasimov group over young wolves,who rushed to power," the oppositionist summed up.
It will be recalled that on January 11, the main leaders of the war were changed in Russia.
In particular, Russian Defense Minister Serhii Shoigu appointed Valery Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, as the commander of the Joint Group of Forces in Ukraine.
Serhiy Surovikin, who held this position before Gerasimov, was appointed his deputy.
Surovikin remained in office for only three months.
It should be noted that at the end of December 2022, the head of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Budanov, stated that Surovikin had joined Prigozhin to oppose the head of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu.
That is why the "Wagner" units so fanatically tried to capture Bakhmut.
According to Russian oppositionist Andriy Piontkovsky, the private armies of Prigozhin, Kadyrov and Shoigu are preparing for a civil war in the Russian Federation over the redistribution of property.
