The position of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz regarding the supply of Leopard tanks to Ukraine depends on US President Joe Biden.

Politico writes about this with reference to two unnamed German officials.

Thus, on condition of anonymity, two German officials said that Scholz's position strongly depends on US President Joe Biden, with whom the chancellor had already closely coordinated his actions when last week he published a joint statement in which he announced the joint supply of German and American combat vehicles to Ukraine infantry

"Great Britain's moves to supply Ukraine with battle tanks (ed. - we are talking about the Challenger 2 tanks that the British decided to provide to Ukraine) are a headache for Olaf Scholz, but it is still unlikely that the German chancellor will overcome his reluctance to send heavy German armored vehicles without following the example of Washington," reports Politico.

Moreover, Scholz's spokesman said on January 11 that London's plans to supply Ukraine with British-made Challenger 2 tanks will not change the German government's position on refusing to provide Ukraine with powerful Leopard 2 tanks.

It is worth noting that the publication previously reported that France and Poland are secretly putting pressure on Germany to start supplying European countries with Leopard 2 tanks for the Armed Forces.

Warsaw even proposed that German-made Leopard tanks could be supplied to Ukraine through a wider alliance of European countries.

President of Poland Andrzej Duda announced

the decision to supply a

company of Leopard tanks on January 11 in Lviv during a meeting of the Lublin Triangle.

At the same time, Politico emphasizes that a big obstacle for this is that Berlin must give the green light to the re-export of German-made weapons.

And according to the publication, at the January 20 meeting in Ramstein, Western partners will put pressure on Scholz to change his position.

We will remind that, in addition to Poland, Finland is also not against transferring Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, but with the condition that such a decision must be made jointly in Europe.

Thus, for now, this issue depends only on Germany, which is currently blocking the decision.

However, not everyone there supports Scholz's position on the refusal to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

For example, the head of the defense committee, Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, said that the

Bundestag will continue to put pressure on the chancellor

so that Berlin provides Leopard tanks to Kyiv.
