Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, was assigned to lead the special military operation conducted by Russia in Ukraine.

APA's Moscow correspondent reports with reference to the Russian Ministry of Defense that Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has signed a corresponding order.

It was reported that Shoigu made new appointments to lead the special operation.

Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov was appointed the commander of the Joint Forces Group.

Valery Gerasimov's deputies in the Joint Grouping were appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces, Colonel-General Sergey Surovikin, Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces, Army General Oleg Salyukov, and Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Colonel-General Alexei Kim.

The Ministry of Defense explained that raising the level of command of the special military operation is related to the improvement of the quality of all types of support of the troop groups, and the effectiveness of command and control.
