An Istanbul court has sentenced Turkish Medical Union chairwoman Dr. Sebnem Korur Fincancı to nearly three years in prison for "spreading propaganda in favor of a terrorist organization," with rights activists denouncing her trial as an attempt to silence government critics , reported the Associated Press.

The court ruled that Dr. Finjandzhe be released from pretrial detention while she appeals the sentence, the agency added.

Finjanja, 63, was arrested in October and accused of engaging in propaganda for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Her arrest came after a media interview in which she called for an independent investigation into allegations that the Turkish military used chemical weapons against Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq.

During the trial, Finjandje rejected accusations that she was making propaganda during the interview, insisting that she was giving a professional opinion.
