Sweden is preparing legislation that will allow the construction of more nuclear plants in order to boost electricity production and increase the country's energy security, Prime Minister Wolf Kristersson said today, Reuters reported.

The prime minister has made expanding Sweden's nuclear capacity a key goal of his right-wing government in a bid to halt a decades-long process of phasing out reactors that has left the country relying heavily on renewable but sometimes less predictable energy, the agency noted. .

The proposed new legislation, which must be approved by parliament, would allow new reactors to be located in more locations in Sweden.

"We clearly need more electricity generation in Sweden," Kristersson told a news conference.

The Scandinavian country currently has three operational nuclear power plants with a total of six reactors.
