[Compiled Chen Chengliang/Comprehensive Report] Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand (Anita Anand) announced on the 10th that Ottawa will purchase the "National Advanced Air Defense System" (NASAMS) from the United States and transfer it to Ukraine.

Europravda reported that Anand made the announcement after a phone call with Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov.

"In the event of Russia's brutal air strikes against Ukraine, this air defense system will help protect Ukrainian settlements and critical infrastructure from drones, missiles and aircraft," she stressed.

Anand added that the extremely high efficiency of the NASAMS system will make Canada's assistance an invaluable contribution to Ukraine's defense capabilities.

"By providing comprehensive military assistance, Canada will continue to support the people of Ukraine in their struggle against Russia's illegal and unwarranted aggression."

Anand did not disclose the quantity and price of NASAM purchased, as well as the delivery schedule.

Last August, the U.S. Department of Defense awarded Raytheon a US$180 million (approximately NT$5.48 billion) contract to produce two sets of NASAMS systems, with ammunition included in the price.

The NASAMS system is jointly developed by Raytheon and Kongsberg of Norway. It uses the Raytheon MPQ-64 "Sentinel" radar as the core, and is equipped with the ground-launched version of the AIM-120 air-to-air missile. The maximum interception range can reach 25 kilometers, and it can also be replaced. Several types of missiles, including the Stinger and the Sidewinder, can defend against deadly threats like Russian fighter jets and cruise missiles.

Since its inception, NASAMS has been adopted by 12 countries around the world. The United States has deployed it in Washington DC since 2005, guarding the White House airspace around the clock, and experienced the inauguration ceremonies and State of the Union speeches of four presidents.

The United States is expected to assist Ukraine with 8 sets of NASAMS, and 2 sets have been delivered so far.

NASAMS is the first advanced medium- and long-range air defense missile system that Ukraine has obtained. The United States is expected to assist 8 sets of S, and 2 sets have been delivered so far.
