Over three million trees have been planted in Egypt in the first half of the 2022/2023 fiscal year as part of the "100 million trees" presidential initiative, the deputy minister of local development of the North African country, Khaled Kassem, announced, as quoted by Al Ahram. BTA reported.

The trees are planted along major roads and highways throughout the country.

The campaign was launched last summer in the run-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC 27) held in Sharm El Sheikh in November.

The Egyptian government has earmarked three billion local pounds for the massive project.

The goal is to double the share of green space per capita, which is currently 1.2 square meters, after its completion.

This will contribute to reducing pollution and dust, as well as harmful emissions by 61.2 million tons per year.

The first phase envisages the planting of ten million trees by the end of next year.

Fifteen million trees will be planted annually over the next six years.
