Arkansas lawmakers gathered yesterday for the start of the annual session.

The state's new governor said her top priority is passing education reform legislation, which she says will focus on improving literacy, teacher pay raises, school safety measures and public funding for private or homework training.

Sanders also said she would support a law similar to the one in Florida, which would ban sex education and gender identity classes until third grade.

Other items on Sanders' legislative agenda include measures to cut state income tax and public safety.

She takes office at a time when the state has more than $2 billion in reserves and Republicans have expanded their majority in November's midterm elections.
