An effective sentence of 1 year in prison and public censure was handed down today by the District Court in Ruse in the case against an 18-year-old student who was his peers.

The decision is final and not subject to appeal.

The video, in which Jan Mahmoud, who was still a minor at the time, punched and humiliated another boy caused a wave of outrage in the Danube city in early November last year.

There was even tension in front of the young man's house, against whom other complaints of violence were filed.

A total of 6 charges have been brought against him - for inflicting light bodily harm on hooligan motives to one boy, as well as for robbery, extortion and inflicting medium bodily harm on another, BNT reported.

A new revelation about the fighter from Ruse - this is where it all starts

Because of the incident, Mahmud, who until now had great hopes in rowing, was expelled from the canoe-kayak club and had to complete his studies at the Ruse sports school on his own.

The victim of the beating from last year's video, Ivo Bonev, was present at the case.

He said he hoped for an effective sentence that would teach Mahmoud and other youths like him the necessary lesson that aggression is not the answer.

The 18-year-old student pleaded guilty.

He, as well as his lawyers, entered into a plea agreement with the prosecution for an effective sentence, which was approved by the District Court.

The one-year term will be deducted from the time Jan Mahmoud has been in custody since November last year.
