Two people died in the hard landing of a small plane in freezing conditions in the Russian Far North, Reuters and TASS reported.

The emergency services announced that the cause of the accident was the icing of the plane, BTA reported.

The An-2 plane with two crew members and 10 passengers crashed about 10 kilometers from the village of Karataika in the Nenets Autonomous Region.

It is an independent subject of the Russian Federation, part of the Arkhangelsk region.

"According to information received by phone from a passenger on the plane, two people have died. A ground team is traveling to the scene with snowmobiles and a helicopter," the Ministry of Emergency Situations announced.

The plane was flying on a route from the Naryan Mar administrative center to Karatayka and Varandey.

The director of the local air force informed TASS that the plane flew in conditions of fog and polar night.
