The UK Government will update the list of countries whose conditions for gender reassignment meet the requirements applied in the UK.

The list is being reviewed to ensure that countries that have less strict regulation of legal gender reassignment are removed from it.

Bulgaria is on the list of countries that have strict requirements, reports BTA.

People from countries and territories not on the approved list must apply for a certificate from the UK to have their gender legally recognized here.

The list was last updated in 2011, when Montenegro and Latvia were removed from the approved countries.

This topic is being raised again after changes to the Gender Equality Act come into effect in Scotland, making it easier to change gender.

Transgender Scots will need to apply for a UK gender recognition certificate to be recognized outside Scotland under changes to be made by the government.

They aim to combat fears that the new bill could lead to "gender tourism" to circumvent stricter rules in the rest of the UK.

The new law allows one to change legal gender without a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria in just three months.

It lowers the minimum age at which gender reassignment can be applied for from 18 to 16.

Scotland will be added to the list of countries that do not have strict gender reassignment regulation if the Scottish Government does not change the law and require a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

Government sources said a review of the list would be carried out before action was taken to block the gender recognition bill in Scotland.

The Sunday Times reported yesterday that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was keen to take direct action rather than take the matter to the High Court.

The charity Stonewall urged the government not to intervene, warning it would damage the UK's reputation and undermine relations with the Scottish government.
