The Swedish Presidency of the European Union has started consultations with the member states regarding Kosovo's application for membership in the European Union and at this moment does not want to prejudge what the results of these consultations will be, reports the KosovaPress agency, citing Sweden's ambassador to the EU, Lars Danielsson, who personally initiated these consultations, BTA reports.

"We are consulting with many countries to see what decision to make on this request. We have five countries that do not recognize Kosovo and it is natural that I consult with them first. I have already met with some and we are continuing the meetings," said Danielsson.

Sweden's permanent representative to the EU said the decision on how to proceed with Kosovo's application for EU membership was procedural as well as political.

"This is a procedural decision, but one of great political importance. I do not want to prejudge the results of the consultations, but as soon as I see that a consensus is being built among the member states on how to act, I will notify the member states. We have two alternatives: take it to the Commission or not to take it to the Commission. But we are working very hard on this case," Danielsson said.

The Czech Presidency then did not have time to consider the request, but only notified the member states of its submission.

The case is now in the hands of the Swedish presidency, which is consulting on what decision to make.
