On Monday, January 9,

Taiwan

condemned China for conducting its second military exercises around the island in less than a month.

And Taiwan's defense ministry said it had detected 57 Chinese aircraft and four naval vessels operating around the island in the previous 24 hours, including 28 aircraft that flew into Taiwan's air defense zone.

Reuters writes about it.

Some of the 28 planes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial buffer between the two sides.

Among the planes were fighter jets, and two nuclear bombers flew to the south of Taiwan.

China's military command said late Sunday that its forces had organized "joint combat readiness patrols and real combat exercises" in the maritime and airspace around Taiwan, focusing on ground strikes and naval attacks.

According to China's statement, the exercise was aimed at testing joint combat capabilities and "resolutely countering the provocative actions of foreign and separatist forces advocating Taiwan independence."

Escalation between China and Taiwan

In 2022, tensions between China and Taiwan escalated again.

The occasion was the visit

of the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.

China has reacted critically to the plans of American congressmen and leaders of the Congress to visit Taiwan.

Joe Biden emphasized that the United States will

defend the island of Taiwan

in the event of a Chinese invasion.

Taiwan has warned that China is studying the experience of the war in Ukraine, started by Russia, to develop its own "hybrid war" strategy against Taiwan.

The communist government of mainland China claims the island of Taiwan as its territory.

The PRC regularly carries out provocative missions with the approach of military aircraft and ships to the island.

In recent years, this has already become commonplace.

Taiwan calls the purpose of these sorties attempts to exhaust the island's forces and test the reaction.
