NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg admits the possibility of NATO supplying heavy tanks to Ukraine.

He stated this in an interview with Svenska Dagbladet.

Responding to a journalist's question about the possibility of Ukraine receiving German Leopard or American Abrams tanks, the NATO Secretary General said: "I don't rule it out. But I won't promise anything either."

Stoltenberg once again repeated that the war in Ukraine should end at the negotiating table.

However, he assured that during the hostilities, the West should support Ukraine with weapons so that Kyiv has a strong position at the table of future negotiations.

"If we want Ukraine to remain independent, then we must continue to support it with weapons," Vinsh urged.

The NATO Secretary General also advocated an increase in the target level of defense spending in the Alliance countries, which is currently equal to 2% of GDP.

"One suggestion that many think is reasonable is that 2% should not be a target, but a minimum. I understand that it may be difficult for governments to find the money for this, but unfortunately we live in a dangerous world and we have to maintain peace. It costs money," Stoltenberg concluded.

Tanks for the Armed Forces: why the West hesitates

Earlier in the media it was reported that Britain is considering the possibility of supplying Ukraine with Challenger 2 tanks. In turn, France will hand over Bastion armored personnel carriers and AMX-10RC wheeled tanks to Ukraine.

According to Politico, Zelensky called on Washington to supply modern tanks and planes, but Biden remained adamant.

The Pentagon explained that they are not transferring Abrams tanks to the Armed Forces due to operational difficulties.

Meanwhile, Germany has said that it does not plan to act independently on sending Leopard tanks to Ukraine, as it is being done in coordination with other NATO partners.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz argues that this decision is a "policy of caution".

Poland has said that it can transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, but does not want to do it alone.
