Shankar Mishra was arrested by the Delhi Police on Friday, six weeks after the incident.

New Delhi :

An elderly woman was urinated on by an inebriated passenger during Air India's New York-Delhi flight.

A co-passenger who boarded the plane with him told NDTV that Shankar Mishra had consumed a lot of alcohol and was not well even during lunch.

Despite the matter coming to notice, the supply of his liquor was not stopped.

Later, Shankar Mishra had calmed down and said, 'Brother, I think I am in trouble,' Dr. Sugata Bhattacharjee, who was sitting next to him on the flight, told NDTV.

Bhattacharjee, a doctor of audiology in the US, said he had alerted the cabin crew about the passenger, who seemed unable to handle his drink.

Dr. Bhattacharjee said, "We were served lunch about an hour after take-off and he had already consumed four drinks in 40 minutes."

She said, "During lunch he repeatedly asked me questions like do you have children and what do they do. I thought he was unable to stop because of alcohol. I told the staff about this, the staff bus Smiled.

After that the man was given at least one more drink.

Dr. Bhattacharjee, who filed the complaint on the same day, November 26, said that there had been "lapses at many levels" in handling the incident.

He said, "My two-page complaint - it was simply thrown away, if the media had not picked it up, no one would have come to know about it. My complaint was not about the passenger being intoxicated, it was about the incident." Bad judgment by the pilot."

Dr. Bhattacharjee said that he did not see the man urinating on the elderly woman passenger and woke up only after Mishra returned to his seat.

The woman, who was completely drenched in urine, was given a pajama and made to stand in the gallery for about 20 minutes.

After this, the cabin crew spread some blankets and made them sit on the same seat.

Dr. Bhattacharjee said, "I advocated that they give a separate seat to the woman. I said that your four seats are vacant."

Dr. Bhattacharjee said, 'The staff said it was the pilot's decision.'

That decision came after two hours and he was given a new seat.

Dr. Bhattacharjee said that the crew also released both the passengers to settle the matter, which should not have happened.

When asked whether the woman was forced to 'compromise' with Shankar Mishra, he said, 'Yes'.

He said, "I didn't like that they made them sit opposite each other, you don't bring the attacker and the victim face to face. The crew and the captain cannot mediate in such a matter. It is a crime and their job is a crime." to complain about."

Dr. Bhattacharjee said that Shankar Mishra was conscious when he woke up.

He said, 'Brother I think I am in trouble.'

I said, 'Yes you are.'

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran today admitted that Air India's response should have been quicker.

Chandrasekaran said in a statement, "We failed to deal with this situation the way it should have been."

Shankar Mishra was arrested by the Delhi Police on Friday, six weeks after the incident, and has been sent to judicial custody for a fortnight.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has apologized and said that four cabin crew and a pilot have been removed from the roster and the airline is reviewing its in-flight alcohol policy.
